Uniform

Based on relevant literature, artworks and museum materials, experts of Ethnographic Museum of Split in cooperation with members of Historical Unit "Kliški uskoci" have created conceptual basis and proposition for creation of two different types of uskok uniforms, common uskok uniform and uskok captain's uniform.

Uskok uniform

Basic type of uskok uniform, according to available facts and analogies, relies on the traditional forms of men's clothing of that time in the Dalmatian hinterland, and also on their recorded form that was preserved in Ethnographic Museum of Split.

Elements of uskok uniform:

  • shirt - a flat type of tunic of thicker domestic flax linen with wide sleeves; embroidered on sleeve wrists and shoulders
  • ječerma - a vest of red cloth with metal appliques
  • trousers - a type of pantaloons, of blue homemade cloth
  • waistband - of colourful woollen and silk threads
  • socks - knitted of white domestic wool
  • opanci - traditional intertwined shoes
  • kaban - a coat with a hood and sleeves of homemade brown cloth
  • cap - a reddish type with conical top

Uskok captain's uniform

Reconstruction of captain's uniform is based on the descriptions and artworks from the 16th century. It belongs more to the category of historical costumes exclusively related to a certain historical person, which is rarely preserved in historical materials. Identity of this uniform comes from traditional domestic dressing culture, and in its structure (materials and fabric) highlights stylistic contours of Western European dressing of the high society.

Elements of uskok captain's uniform:

  • shirt - of a thinner flax linen of Western manufacture (called "kambre"), contemporary Western urban shirt
  • ječerma - a vest of velvet with appliques of golden threads and silver filigree buttons
  • kazak - a cape of fine red cloth reaching to the knees
  • trousers - a type of pantaloons, of blue homemade cloth
  • waistband - a levantine type woven with silk
  • socks - knitted of white domestic wool
  • opanci - traditional intertwined shoes
  • kaban - a coat with a hood and sleeves of homemade brown cloth
  • cap - a flat type, of red cloth with a fur brim and with a feather on top

Manufacturing of uniforms, sewing and tailoring was entrusted to Liposava Kuštović from Prvić Šepurina, an engineer of textiles and an expert in manufacture of traditional garments. Cloth for trousers and coats was woven in Šibenik, and "tread by water" (hrv. stupati, Croatian expression for special treatment of cloth) in Otočac. Silver appliques were cast in Zagreb. Opanci were made in Gljev, at the foot of Kamešnica. Waistbands were made in Vrlika.
